I am sure that you already aware about OSI Model if you read previous OSI Model article. You surely already aware about how important OSI Model is at data communication. All data communication service our needs base on the 7 layer OSI Model this day. So, I think that it is useful to know function of each layer of this OSI Model. Ok, let's know each layer functions of OSI Model.
Layer 1: Physical Layer
Physical Layer is responsible for change data to bit process and delivering trough transmission medium i.e. cable, radio, optic, etc. Physical Layer also maintains the physical connection between the systems.
Layer 2: Data Link Layer
Data Link Layer provides data to be ready to send trough Physical layer. Data Link Layer frame data regarding to "hardware" needs, then send it to Physical Layer which deliver it trough transmission medium. Data Link Layer also responsible for network card communication, Physical Layer communication between system, and error handling.
Layer 3: Network Layer
Network Layer is responsible for network address rule handling. Network Layer use network addressing rule to determine the route for data delivery. Network layer also maintain data queue in network system. The data in this layer is called packet data.
Layer 4: Transport Layer
Transport Layer is responsible to change data into segments and maintain the "end to end" logical connection between the terminals. Transport Layer also provides reliable data transfer. Transport Layer control the reliability trough flow control, segmentation/desegmentation and error control.
Layer 5: Session Layer
Session Layer determine how terminals to keep, maintain, and manage the connection, also how the terminals connect to each other. The connection is called "session" in this layer.
Layer 6: Presentation Layer
Presentation Layer is responsible for how data is converted and formatted regarding to data transfer process. For example, Presentation Layer does data conversion from word document to ASCII text. Presentation Layer forms a code conversion, data translation, and encryption.
Layer 7: Application Layer
Application Layer is OSI Model layer closest to end user which means this layer directly interact with user network application. Application layer is responsible to handle all information exchange between network applications within the network.
