CDMA 2000 Data Service Network Architecture

Ok, now we back to CDMA 2000 again. After read an Introduction for CDMA 2000 , you can read about network architecture of CDMA 2000 in this article –CDMA 2000 Data Service Network Architecture exactly. Data Service is a packet switch system of CDMA 2000 which serves the data call from CDMA 2000 user (mobile phone or modem). Data Service network consist of Mobile Station (MS), Radio Network (RN), Packet Data Serving Node ( PDSN), Home Agent (HA), and -- Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA)


Mobile Station (MS)

Having prime function to build, maintain, and tear down the connection (both of voice and data) at CDMA 2000 network. Mobile Station (MS) build connection by request radio channel from Radio Network (RN) and then Mobile Station (MS) responsible to maintain that radio channel. Mobile Station (MS) also do packet buffering if radio channel not available at that time. Mobile Station (MS) usually support for data encryption and CDMA 2000 data technology such as Mobile IP and Simple IP.

Radio Network (RN)

Consist of two components which are Packet Control Function (PCF) and Radio Resources Control (RRC). Prime function of PCF is to build, maintain, and tear down connection with Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN). PCF communicate with RRC to request and to control radio channel which use to control radio channel for packet delivery from/to MS. PCF also responsible to collect accounting information and send it to PDSN. RCC support MS authentication and authorization to get radio access. RRC also support air interface encryption for Mobile Station (MS).

Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN)

PDSN have many function – prime function is do packet routing to IP network or to Home Agent (HA). PDSN provide dynamic IP Address and maintain Point-To-Point (PPP) session to Mobile Station (MS). PDSN start authentication, authorization, and accounting to AAA for each packet data session. In opposite direction, PDSN receive users profile parameters from AAA which consist of service type and security.

Home Agent (HA)

Home Agent (HA) act in Mobile IP protocol implementation by send all packets to PDSN (as FA) and do opposite. Home Agent (HA) provides security by do Mobile Station (MS) authentication trough Mobile IP registration. Home Agent (HA) also maintains the connection with AAA for users' information acceptation.

Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA)

AAA having different function depends on network type in where AAA is connected. If AAA server is connected to service provider network, the prime function is to forward authentication request from PDSN to home IP Network, and also to authorize response from home IP network to PDSN. AAA also keeps accounting information of Mobile Station (MS), provide user profile, and PDSN QoS information. If AAA server is connected to home IP network, the function is to do authentication and authorization for MS base on local AAA request. If AAA is connected to broker network, the function is to forward request and response between service provider network and home IP network which do not have bilateral connection.

That's all. All of above Data Service Network Architecture of CDMA 2000 node is working together to create reasonable data service for CDMA 2000 data service users. Data service users serve many services such as data content, BREW, internet, online shop, and others.
