As already obvious, telecommunication business is a service business in where the availability is the most important. People tend to demand that the service is always available when they need. Based on my experience, it is hard to sell the telecommunication service if the availability is low. As example, for mobile service, it will be hard to be sold if the coverage is very low which means the availability is very limited.

With above example, it should be already obvious that the availability is the number one it telecommunication business. Therefore, the power protection become very important. It is a big sin if the telecommunication service is down because of the power failure in core hardware. You may think that as long as have the reliable UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), the power problem has already solved.

You are very wrong if think like that. UPS alone is not the best answer in term of power failure solution. There is still possibility that the UPS will be fail to protect the telecommunication hardware power. It means needed the special power protection to overcome this situation. There are many power protection technology out there which can be used as telecommunication power protection system.

However, since it is very critical, I suggest to be careful when choose the power protection technology and system. POWERVAR might a good option as power protection provider. These days, Telecommunications is all about data service in my opinion. It is not the era in where a telecommunication companies can survive just by voice and SMS service anymore. At least, telecommunication companies should offer some interesting VAS (Value Added Service) contents if want to survive in the fierce competition with other telecommunication companies. Beside the interesting VAS contents, telecommunication companies can also offer the data service as a way to survive.

Data Service refers to any IP based related services such as VPN, Internet, Cloud Computing, and many more. Since many telecommunication companies has aware about this situation, the competition is already high in data service field. Therefore the effective marketing method is a must to attract the new customers so the data service can generate the significant additional (if not main) revenue for telecommunication companies.

Based on my experience, one effective marketing method is the interesting booth in telecommunication or Computing related Exhibition. I am sure that telecommunication companies can effectively sell their data service vie Exhibition as long as can create an interesting Exhibition Booth. And fortunately, it is not a difficult one to have an interesting Exhibition Booth. We only need to combine the good trade shows displays with interesting truss, and logo floor mats.

From the combination above, it is surely the telecommunication companies can effectively market their data service since has a good and an interesting exhibit booths which will attract many new potential customers during the telecommunication or computing related exhibition. So, if you are the boss (or at least the commanding line), you should tell your marketing team to join the local exhibition but of course, it is not only to join but to join with a good preparation for effective marketing so can produce a good selling during the exhibition.

In this Mobile era, we, as users, surely need to understand the Mobile Telecommunication terms so can get optimum benefit from our cellphones, smartphones, or Tablet PC. I have shared several mobile telecommunication terms on The Mobile Telecommunication Terms Part I and The Mobile Telecommunication Terms Part II article. This time is the last part of this Mobile telecommunication terms post series.

In my opinion, It should be already enough to get optimum benefit from mobile telecommunication by knowing the terms on these post series. OK, here the rest of mobile telecommunication terms that need to be knew:

Long Term Evolution (LTE)

LTE refers to next step mobile technology of 3G and 3.5 G technology. Yeah, LTE can be said as product of 3G and 3.5 G advance development. LTE download speed is up-to 100 Mbps while the upload speed is up-to 50 Mbps. LTE is the best choice for the GSM based mobile carriers since only need minimum investment to move from GSM networks to LTE networks.

Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS)

UMTS is one of 3G technologies which is developed toward 4G technology. Usually, UMTS gadgets also supports GSM so can operate on dual mode GSM-UMTS. UMTS is developed on Europe and officially announces at 2004.

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000-1x

CDMA 2000-1x refers to a CDMA based data service of 2G technology. This CDMA 2000-1x is based on IMT-2000 (International Telecommunication Union-200) standardization. CDMA 2000-1x speed is up-to 144 Kbps which is faster than GSM 2G's data service, GPRS.

Airtime

Airtime refers to the call duration that do on mobile networks. Airtime is calculated from call success until close the call connection. The mobile cost is usually calculated based on this Airtime.

Base Transceiver Station (BTS)

BTS is a radio station that server the access networks to mobile telecommunication's customers. It can be said that BTS is interface between customers and carriers. Usually, one mobile gadget is handled by three BTS in active-standby mode so if one BTS is fail to serve, the other will take over. It means a smooth connection experience for users. BTS capacity that determine the speed of mobile data access. It means that the 2G, 3G, and 4G technology is based on this BTS technology indeed.

Repeater

Repeater is refers to an electronic devices that can receive the BTS signal and then re-transmit it without changing anything beside the signal power. Yes, Repeater increase the weak received BTS signal into the acceptable level for mobile gadgets. Repeater usually use on the high building crowded area to avoid the blank spot.

Cell ID

Cell ID is a unique identity that used to know BTS information which includes the BTS's location. It is true that the Cell ID's location determination is less accurate (since the area is to wide) but it is already enough to determine the current location of mobile gadgets in general.

As I have mentioned on the Mobile Telecommunication Terms Part I, we are living in the mobile telecommunication era. It is a must that we know about mobile telecommunication terms these days so we can utilize the mobile technology into optimum. Indeed, to use our smart phone and Tablet PC into optimum for our needs. This knowledge is also needed so we can choose the right mobile gadgets based on our needs.

I have share several mobile telecommunication terms before but still, there are more of the terms that need to be known for sake of mobile telecommunication optimum utilizing. Here, on this telecommunication blog, I share several more of mobile telecommunication terms:

Third and Half Generation (3.5G)

3.5G refers to mobile telecommunication's transition technology between 3G and 4G technology. 3.5G technology offers up-to 14 Mbps download speed and up-to 5.8 Mbps upload speed. 3.5G networks utilizes HSPA+ (high-speed packet access) technology.

Fourth Generation (4G)

4G refers to the fourth generation of mobile telecommunication technology which also known as mobile broadband technology. 4G is the official successor of 3G technology. 4G networks offers the IP Based secure and complete high-speed mobile networks. It is claimed that 4G offers the access speed as same as on Local Area Network (LAN) which offers 100 Mbps access speed. There are two models of 4G which are LTE (as 3G successor) and WiMAX (as WiFi successor).

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)

GPRS is a technology that used to deliver data service via mobile telecommunication networks. GPRS is a 2.5G mobile telecommunication technology. GPRS offers various types of data services such as Email, MMS, internet browsing. GPRS supports up-to 115 kbps access speed.

Enhanced Data for Global Evolution (EDGE)

EDGE is the developed form of mobile telecommunication technology GSM/GPRS. EDGE offers 3 times access speed if compare with GPRS networks. EDGE's access speed is up-to 236 Kbps. EDGE offers various types of data services that similar as like on GPRS such as Email, MMS, and internet browsing.

High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA)

HSPA is the next step on mobile telecommunication technology after the GPRS and EDGE. HSPA is a mobile telecommunication technology that created by combining many mobile technology standard. HSPA offers broader and more speed for mobile telecommunication networks. Based on the speed, HSPA is divided into two standard which are HSPA and HSUPA.

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX)

WiMax is advanced mode of Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) technology. If WiFi only cover around 100m radius, WiMAX can cover around 8 kilometers radius. So far, WiMAX has supports up-to 128 Mbps download speed and 56 Mbps upload speed.

Internet Protocol Address (IP Address)

IP Address refers to number that identify a web site or server on the IP networks. IP Address use numbers (not the fonts) as identification. As example, 66.102.7.104 is the IP Address of Google web site.

It is a Mobile Telecommunication era! Yeah, that's true. If aware what happened in this last decade, it seems the telecommunication business has shifted to mobile telecommunication business – the mobile internet business exactly. It can be said that the telecommunication business these days is around the smart phones as well as tablet PCs which is the hottest mobile gadgets in my opinion. Therefore, it is important to understand what is the Mobile Telecommunication about.

First Generation (1G)

2.5G refers to the transition of mobile telecommunication technology between 2G and 3G. 2.5G mobile telecommunication technology offers more data service capacity than 2G mobile telecommunication technology. 2.5G mobile technology starts the GPRS and CDMA1X era with very slow mobile internet service. It is a mobile internet service with dial-up speed.

Second and Third Generation (2.75G)

2.75G refers to the transition of mobile telecommunication technology between 2.5G and 3G. We can include the EDGE in this 2.75G mobile telecommunication technology. 2.75G mobile telecommunication technology offers better data service speed that 2.5G mobile telecommunication technology. EDGE offers 236.8 kbps data service speed.

Third Generation (3G)

3G refers to third generation of mobile telecommunication technology. 3G is announced in Japan on year 2001. Right after that, 3G mobile telecommunication technology is spread out world wide fast. 3G mobile telecommunication technology offers next level of mobile data service. 3G started the fast mobile internet connection – the mobile broadband service. The access speed of 3G mobile telecommunication internet is up-to 2 Mbps which is very enough to upload/download the heavy consume bandwidth contents such as video, music, etc.

Let's round up what we already learned through the entire articles about PDSN 2000's AAA process. I round up it into six points so this blog's readers can get the complete picture of PDSN 2000's AAA operation.

Here we go:

AAA is an important components in CDMA 2000 system. It is because AAA function responsibles to support security and network functions.
CDMA 2000's security components cover key management, authentication procedure, encryption, and privacy.
A-key is a master key that used for authentication process and encryption by using CAVE algorithm.

CDMA 2000 R-UIM Operation, Authentication Calculation and Encryption Keys Generating

As I told in previous article about CDMA 2000 R-UIM Operation, there are three prime function of CDMA 2000 R-UIM card which are SSD controlling, authentication calculation, and encryption keys generating. The Authentication calculation has been discussed on the previous CDMA 2000 R-UIM Operation article. Therefore, now, I will discuss about Authentication Calculation and Encryption Keys Generating of CDMA 2000 R-UIM in this article.

Instead discuss the Authentication Calculation and Encryption Keys in separate article, I think it is better discuss both of them in single article. It is because both of them is also said as one function since work together on same time to run the Run CAVE function as below picture:

UIM record the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) – both of the IMSI_M and IMSI-T – for users identification. The ten bottom digit is coded into 34 bit subset which called as IMSI_M_S and IMSI_T_S. Then, each of IMSI_M_S and IMSI_T_S is devided into 24 bits be IMSI_M_S1 and IMSI_T_S1 as well as IMSI_M_S2 and IMSI_T_S2. IMSI_M_S1 and IMSI_T_S1 is for bottom 7 bits identification and IMSI_M_S2 and IMSI_T_S2 is for the other 3 bits. For authentication calculation, 24 bits of bottom 7 digits is used in most of applications.

IMSI that used for the authentication calculation is determined when the R-UIM is plugged-in into Mobile Equipment (ME). The Get Response command UIM to convey the AUTHR output or AUTHU (global chalenge response or unique challenge response) to ME. The temporary parameter will be recorded in UIM which used on ciphering keys calculation. This ciphering keys calculation is done by running the Generate key/VPM function. The Generate Key/VPM function is shown on the below piccture:

Generate Key/VPM function will produce keys for ciphering mechanism. Generate Key/VPM function will process the several parameters that produced by authentication response from Run CAVE function. Several keys that produced by Generate Key/VPM will be used directly by ME for encryption function. The others will be further processed inside the ME for EMMEA functions.

CDMA 2000 R-UIM Operations, SSD Controlling

Indeed, There are three prime functions/operations of R-UIM of CDMA 2000 network which are SSD controlling, authentication calculating and encryption keys generating, and call history parameters managing. At this article, let's only talk about SSD Controlling function and let the two others will be talked on the next CDMA 2000 R-UIM operations. CDMA 2000 R-UIM save and control SSD which is used to calculate the authentication response and keys generating.

CDMA 2000 R-UIM's SSD is from A-key which saved at R-UIM. SSD updating is started when the CDMA 2000 network send UPDATE SSD command. UPDATE SSD command is consisted of RANDSSD parameter which is sent to Mobile Equipment (ME). SSD customers updating only can be updated by the customers' home network itself. You can see this updating flow at the picture below:

When the network initiate the SSD update to customers, customers' ME will save the RANDSSD parameter then generate some random numbers which is called as RANDSeed. Then, ME start Base Station Challenge by sending RANDSeed parameter to R-UIM. This step makes that ME generate RANDBS. Get Response command tell R-UIM to send RANDBS to ME and then forward it to network.

At next step (at picture below), ME run the SSD update function by sending a command to R-UIM which consisted of RANDSSD parameter and control data field. Then, R-UIM calculate the new SSD value as well as calculate the expected value from network response of RANDBS which is called as AUTHBS. The ESN and IMSI which are used at this step, is decided when R-UIM plug in into ME.

At the network, RANDSSD parameter is also used to generate new SSD value. When RANDBS is accepeted from ME, CDMA 2000 network combines it with new SSD to calculate AUTHBS. Then, AUTHBS is sent from network to ME. ME forwards AUTHBS value (that accepted before) to R-UIM. This AUTHBS value acts as Confirm SSD parameter. Then, R-UIM compares AUTHBS value that calculated with AUTHBS value that sent by network.

If the value is same, it means the SSD update procedure is success. Then, the new SSD value is saved at R-UIM semi-permanent memory and will be used for the entire authentication calculating. If the AUTHBS value is not same, R-UIM will discard it and still use the old value.

DIAMETER, The Next Mobile Telecommunication Data Network RADIUS Protocol

As we should already know Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) is a network entity that widely used at mobile and fix telecommunication network to provide centralized Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) function. However, these days, it seems that RADIUS can not meet the requirement of the mobile telecommunication standard – especially the mobile telecommunication data standard – which growth very fast at these 5 years. Therefore DIAMETER as successor AAA protocol for RADIUS is created.

Indeed, DIAMETER protocol is not fully as a replacement for RADIUS protocol. DIAMETER protocol is more like as an extended version of RADIUS protocol. DIAMETER adds some new commands and/or attributes at the base protocol. It can be said that DIAMETER protocol provides the upgrade path for RADIUS protocol which means that DIAMETER is the advance version of RADIUS. It means that the base function is the same but the additional function is different.

The main difference between RADIUS and DIAMTER protocol are as below:

Reliable transport protocols (TCP or SCTP, not UDP)
Network or transport layer security (IPsec or TLS)
Transition support for RADIUS, although Diameter is not fully compatible with RADIUS
Larger address space for attribute-value pairs (AVPs) and identifiers (32 bits instead of 8 bits)
Client–server protocol, with exception of supporting some server-initiated messages as well
Both stateful and stateless models can be used
Dynamic discovery of peers (using DNS SRV and NAPTR)
Capability negotiation
Supports application layer acknowledgements, defines failover methods and state machines (RFC 3539)
Error notification
Better roaming support
More easily extended; new commands and attributes can be defined

Please note that DIAMETER application is not a software application but protocol based on the RFC 3588. Indeed RFC 3588 only defines DIAMETER base protocol which is only the minimum requirement for AAA function. DIAMETER base protocol can be extended by adding new commands and/or attributes. DIAMETER protocol still uses the Attributes-Value Pairs (AVPs) based AAA packets.

CDMA 2000 R-UIM and ME Parameters

In the mobile wireless system, mobile station (MS) refers to a users tool that consist of Mobile Equipment (ME) and user identity card. Each mobile wireless system has their own type and name of this user identity card. As example In GSM, the user identity card is known as Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card and in CDMA, the user identity card is known as Removable User Identity Module(R-UIM) card. In this user identity card is saved the needed user information as well as the security information for users. This time, I share the complete parameters that can be found in R-UIM card and Mobile Equipment (ME) of CDMA 2000 for better understanding of client side CDMA 2000.

R-UIM Card Parameters

Here the parameters that used in the CDMA R-UIM Card:

Authentication and keys generation algorithm, usually the algorithm is CAVE algorithm.
A-key which is used for key generation algorithm. A-key is programmed directly into R-UIM by telecommunication operators or can be programmed through over-the-air (OTA). This A-Key cannot be accessed by ME.
SSD which is for authentication functions and key generation. SSD cannot be accesed by ME
Temporary secret parameter which is used to generated ciphering key for authentication processing
COUNT which is accessible for ME. COUNT will increase incrementally when use the network.
IMSI which consist of IMSI_M and IMSI_T. IMSI_M is consist of Mobile Identification Number (MIN) in 10 digit. IMSI_T is not related with MIN. Subscription Identity is accessible for ME.
RUIMID which is the parameter which saved inside of EF RUIMID with '6F31' as identifier
Service Programming Code (SPC) which has '6F33' as identifier. SPC is used for OTASP/OTAPA procedure.
NAM_LOCK which has '6F3' as identifier. NAM_LOCK is saved lock/unlock status of NAM

ME Parameters

I already said that Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) Charging System is a good solution as Data Service Charging System. It is because DPI Charging System offers the most flexible charging. However, the deep packet inspection itself can become the setback for the whole data service system. It is because deep packet inspection (DPI) need more task to be done by data service system which will consume more time and more resources if compare with traditional charging system. Because of it, it is naturally that choose the best DPI charging system for data service is more tricky. In other word, we need careful to choose the DPI Charging System if want to avoid the data service charging chaos or – in long term – to avoid the data service system chaos.

Yes, it is not only that the bad DPI Charging System will disturb the charging but also will disturb the whole data service. It is because the nature of DPI Charging System which inspect the data service packet. If fail, DPI Charging System will affect the flow of data service packet beside the data service charging. It mean that users will find that their service is not smooth. Users will experience the slow browsing or intermittent internet access. This situation is very bad for telecommunication companies since can lead to customer lose fast.

SIP To SIP Call Flow

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a protocol that used for VoIP call between end points (end users). In fact, SIP is the successor of the old VoIP protocol, H323. These days, H323 is almost leaved at behind and all the end-to-end VoIP service is using SIP as the protocol for VoIP call. Therefore it is very important to understand the SIP these days if you are an VoIP engineer. As basic, VoIP engineer should understand the call flow of SIP. As advance, VoIP engineer should understand all the application, function, and RFC around SIP. It will be needed very long time to gain the advance knowledge of SIP.

Therefore, in this article, I will only write about the basic needed knowledge of SIP which is the SIP call flow. Since the SIP call flow can be very complex for complete SIP call, I will limit the SIP call flow for SIP GW to SIP GW only – SIP To SIP call flow indeed. Please see the picture below which tells step by step call flow from analog phone to analog phone while there is the SIP network at the middle.

Form the picture, as I also mentioned at above, we will focus to SIP To SIP call flow which is between the GW-A and GW-B. Here the complete SIP To SIP call flow:

GW-A send SIP INVITE messages (which is a call setup) to GW-B. The INVITE message contains SDP information for capabilities negotiation.
GW-B sends SIP Trying (100) as reply for the SIP INVITE message which means that the INVITE message is received perfectly and also send the SIP Ringing (180) as ringing tone.
Then, if the end users at GW-B side pick up the call, GW-B send SIP OK (200) to GW-A
GW-A send SIP ACK to GW-B which means the SIP connection is established and the voice can be delivered through it
The voice call is delivered through Real Time Protocol (RTP) as voice streams
When end user at GW-A hang-up the call, GWA-A sends SIP BYE message to GW-B
GW-B send SIP OK (200) to response the SIP BYE message and the the call will be release completely.

Telecommunication Price is temporary, Network is permanent

It is true that price war is happening now at telecommunication business field. It is true that the cheaper price alone can attract the customers – especially new customers for telecommunication operator. However the customers will be not loyal if the telecommunication operators can not maintain their customers well – can not offer the reasonable quality for their customers. Yes, it is true that telecommunication companies is able to attract many users with cheap price but if find the quality is low, they will surely leave without long thinking.

One of the Telecommunication service quality parameter is the coverage – the telecommunication network availability exactly. There is no meaning of cheap price if customers can not use the service at some of place, isn't it? Therefore, the telecommunication operator companies should back up their service with large coverage of telecommunication network before decide to include at telecommunication service price war. It is because, as I already mentioned before, the customers will be not loyal if there are many blank spots. There are many places that can not be served well since there is no telecommunication service coverage there.

Yes, for budget operator, it may hard to directly cover the whole area with their telecommunication service since the budget telecommunication operators usually have thin budget. They need to sell first before has budget for network improvement. In that case, the budget telecommunication operators should be creative since there is no exception or excuse for telecommunication network coverage. It is a must since every customers will demand it. Since customers is the king – especially at service business like telecommunication service business – telecommunication operators must fulfill this need.

It can be said that Price is temporary, Network is permanent. It mean that the cheap price only can bring you the fist time customers. The Network quality – including network coverage – which will make the customers become permanent. 7 Steps To Configure SBC Properly

As you might already know, I already wrote about Session Border Controller (SBC) for a couple of times. I already wrote about SBC Accounting, SBC reasoning, and SBC IP Aggregation. All of my writing regarding SBC is base on my hand on experience to operate SBC. And here I am now – try to share other knowledge regarding SBC. I share about 7 Steps that you must do so your SBC can deliver VoIP call properly. I promise that if you follow these steps, you surely able to configure your SBC fast and properly without any failure and no needed down time. Below steps are for whole steps which mean it is from nothing. You always can directly to step number 3 if the network connection is ready.

Here we go:

Step #1. Physical Interface

As in sub-title, we should configure all needed information regarding physical interface such as negotiation type, speed, duplex, label, etc. I can say this configuration is about how to set up physical connection properly. In TCP/IP Layers, it is called as physical layer.

Step #2. Network Interface

If in first step, we already configure the physical interface. In this second step, we configure the network interface. In here, we configure all logical network connection such as VLAN, IP Address, mapping with physical interface, port, IP connection gateway, etc. In seven OSI Layers, it is called as Logical Link Layer and Network Layer.

Step #3. Steering Media Flows

As in sub title, this configuration is about Steer the media flows. Exactly, we configure what port that we use to flows the media (the call). These selected ports are used to modify the SDP. We also state the link that should use by media in here instead use routing (BGP) capability in here. It is to ensure the quality of link because it is hard to predict routing result. And it is often that the best for routing protocol is not the best for VoIP.

Step #4. Translation

This configuration is optional which mean that you can go to next step if you do not need to do digit manipulation. Yes, it is about digit manipulation for both calling and called digit. In here, we configure rule for this digit manipulation such as add prefix, delete prefix, or change prefix. In other word, this is the environment to set up the digit so it is match to next VoIP box and you get the right behavior of this VoIP call.

Step #5. Realm Configuration

In non VoIP network, it is called as trunk. Yes, it is the realm (trunk) for VoIP call in where VoIP call can be send. Usually, one realm is set for one particularly VoIP partner for better management system. In here, we configure IP destination, which network interface that be used, which translation rule be used, etc. It can be said that we put all information regarding the media rule in here to tell how to process each VoIP call that received by SBC.

Step #6. Session Agent

If Realm configuration is for media (call) purpose, Session Agent is for VoIP signaling purpose. In here, we configure VoIP connection (for signaling) information that we want build trough our SBC. We set IP of signaling partner, port that be used for signaling, VoIP protocol type, realm (trunk) that be used, etc that will be used as information to build signaling link with VoIP box partner.

Step #7. VoIP Routing

We add routing information for VoIP call in this part. This routing information will tell SBC to where each call should be routed. In this, we provide the prefix base information to determine the call routing. In here we configure from address, to address, source realm, destination realm, next hop, etc. In short, it is environment to tell SBC how to forward the VoIP call.

Final Words

I already share seven steps to configure Session Border Controller (SBC) so SBC able to do its function as VoIP gateway properly. I promise that by follow these steps you are closer to configure SBC in proper way. It is enough basic guide to start your SBC configuration journey and reach higher level as VoIP engineer. As in Information Security of CDMA 2000 Part 1, you should already know that CDMA's security protocol is the best. It is if compare with other mobile telecommunication technology in its class because of the unique code in each transmit packet. After I write about how Security Layer handle packet from Connection Layer in part 1 article, I am writing about how Security Layer handle packet in contrary. Yes, It is about how Security Layer handle the encrypted packet which come from MAC Layer.

In this situation, Security Layer handle the packet in below steps:

Security Protocol form cryptosync by use Security Protocol header and trailer
After it, Security Protocol discard the header and trailer and then send the cryptosync and packet of Security Protocol to Authentication protocol.
If packet of Authentication Protocol is authenticated, Authentication Protocol do verification for authentication signature by use cryptosync, authentication key, payload of Authentication Protocol, header and trailer of Authentication Protocol, and also other parameters. If authentication signature is match, Authentication Protocol send payload of Authentication Protocol to Encryption Protocol. If authentication signature is not matched, packet will be discard.
If packet of Authentication Protocol is not authenticated, payload of Authentication Protocol will be sent directly to Encryption Protocol
If packet of Encryption Protocol is encrypted, Encryption Protocol use cryptosync and encryption key to decrypt it and then send it to Connection Layer
If packet of Encryption Protocol is not encrypted, packet will be sent directly to Connection Layer
Security Layer provide two pairs of security information for Connection Layer.
The first security information indicate:

Whether Security Layer configuration support encryption for the packet of Security Layer or not
Whether Security Layer decrypt packet of Security Layer or not

The second security information indicate:>

Whether configuration of Security Layer support encryption for packet of Security Layer or not
Whether Security Layer authenticate packet of Security Layer or not

Application or protocol recipient use this information security to decide whether payload will be discarded or not.

Information Security of CDMA 2000 part 1

CDMA's security protocol is the best if compare to other wireless access metode such as TDMA/FDMA. It is because, in CDMA, each user use difrent unique code which make dificult to tape. Unique code is sequence of 42 bits pseudo-random Noise (PN) which is used to scramble the transmitted voice and data. At forward link (from network to mobile hardware), data is scrambled at 19.2 Ksps (symbols per second) rate, and at reverse link, data is scrambled at 1.2288 Mcps (chips per second) rate. And since CDMA 2000 is also use CDMA as its access technology, CDMA 2000 inherit the security of CDMA.

The picture above show the relationship between packet in connection layer, packet in encription layer, packet in authentication layer, paket in security layer, and packet in MAC layer.

When packet from connection layer (which will be encrypted) is sent to security layer, the security layer protocols will do:

Security layer protocol generate cryptosync for destination canal of that pakcet
Connection layer packet and value of cryptosync is sent to encryption protocol
If Connection layer packet willbe encrypted, Encryption protocol use cryptosync, encryption key, and other parameters to encrypt connection layer packet and build encryption protocol packet.
Encryption protocol send encryption control packet and cryptosync to authentication protocol
If encryption protocol packet will be authenticated, authentication protocol use cryptosync, authentication key and other parameters to build authentication protocol packet.
Authentication protocol send authentication protocol packet and cryptosync to security protocol
Security protocol use cryptosync to build header and trailer of security protocol
Security Protocol send security protocol pakcet to MAC layer.

If Cell Phone Number is Our ID

In my opinion, cell phone number seems in evolution to become ID these days. And I guess you may also aware of it – aware that each time you fill some form, it ask to put your phone number, and usually it is asked to put your cell phone number in it. This situation only mean that the cell phone number is important information to identify us. I believe that cell phone number even will become our ID in future.

It is give some benefit if our cell phone as our ID. We as ID owner, only need to maintain one number which is our cell phone number. It is surely will simplify our life – no need to maintain and remember many number which are so annoying some time. And this also make easy to government or any other group that have needs to us – all of them only need dial our ID and talk to us directly. It is really easy and simple, right?

If cell phone number already become and ID, it will be needed a regulation that regulate people to have unique phone number and must register it base on their personal data. And after all of it done, I think it is officially that the cell phone number already can become our ID and we surely can find people by phone – by phone number exactly. Yeah – we put cell phone number in find people tools form, and voila! We can get the result fast.

That what I think will happen when cell phone already become the ID. And do not forget that we also can call the number and ask directly trough it. In my opinion, the find people tools is still needed even tough we can directly call the ID and ask who behind the cell phone. It is because we need to know who behind the cell phone number first so we can have proper talk. Therefore, free phone lookup will be really helpful for many people.

It is helpful for current condition – it is even more helpful when cell phone number already become ID. And the free phone lookup also reversible which mean we can trace phone number trough it by using name. It will be very helpful if we want to contact people that we do not have their cell phone number. I think there are many benefits if cell phone become our ID. How To Use Both of IPv4 and IPv6 in Telecommunication IP Service Smoothly

As you may already aware that Telecommunication business future lies in IP. Yeah, it is true – it is so true exactly. I am watching this process with my own eyes as telecommunication engineer. Value Added Service (VAS) and data service give The best ARPU for Telecommunication operator in these days and please note that VAS and data service are base on IP connection. You also can see by your self that Telecommunication war these days is in additional service instead the voice (core) service. There are so many telecommunication companies that offer facility that allow their costumers to easily access social media directly in their cell phone from every where and any time.

Here in Indonesia, I experience that BlackBerry like technology is a must to be adopted by Telecommunication operators if they want to visible in costumer eyes. It is because social media and email any time/every where connection already became prime needs. This situation make IP service – especially data service – face growth boost in each Telecommunication operator. And since the IP number – Ipv4 exactly – is limited, Telecommunication operator face big problem here. A big problem to improve their data service base on public IP. And do not forget that, IPv4 private IP number is also limited so IP private using only can be temporary solution. Both Ipv4 public and private IP will be run out in near future if we consider the IP service costumers growth.

This situation make that IPv6 using is the only solution. It would be great if Telecommunication operator can directly migrate their IPv4 network to IPv6 network. But I think Telecommunication operator will choose slow migration to avoid an chaos in their IP network. It is because IPv4 and IPv6 very different which make a migration will affect the whole network and hardware. Slow migration will also give bad affect to whole Telecommunication operator IP service even tough it is not as bad as direct migration – but an affect is an affect – It still can affect the Telecommunication operator benefit and reputation.

This hardship which make telecommunication IP engineer think to avoid all mess of IPv4 – IPv6 migration. And there is one great solution for it. We leave the IPv4 network as it is and build new separated IPv6 network. This strategy will avoid disturbing in IPv4 while telecommunication operator still can add their IP service capacity by build IPv6 network. Of course, the both of IP networks – IPv4 and IPv6 – should be integrated. And since Ipv4 and IPv6 is really a different network entities, It will be needed an Ipv4 – IPv6 aggregation. And As I know, there are many hardware that have capabilities for this function. As example, I know that there is an Session Border Controller (SBC) product can support this IPv4 – IPv6 aggregation.

IPSec/IKE in CDMA 2000 Mobile IP

IPSec provide security for information which is delivered trough unprotected network such as internet. IPSec work at network layer, do protection and authentication IP packets. IPSec use IKE to handle protocol and algorithm nego base on local rule. IKE also use to trigger encryption keys and authentication which will be used by IPSec.

Authentication of CDMA 2000 Mobile IP consist of three parts which are:

PDSN start access authentication and authorization
HA start authentication for Mobile IP registration
FA and HA Security Association

For the first part, CHAP (Challenge Hanshake Authentication Protocol) authentication method is used during PPP setup and Mobile IP registration. For second part, PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) authentication method with MS distributed key that used together with local HA authentication. For third part, there are two choices which are with no security association or by use below security keys:

Static configured FA – HA shared key
Dynamic distributed FA – HA shared key
IKE/IPSEC with statistically shared key
IKE/IPSEC with dynamically distributed from Home Radius server
IKE/IPSEC with public certification as defined in X.509

7 Reasons To Use SBC in VoIP Network

SBC is abbreviation of Session Border Controller and as in it's name, SBC work base on session, border, and controller. What is exactly the function of SBC and where do we put it? You may ask these question if you are not familiar with it yet but do not worry I will tell about it in this article. SBC usually (and a must indeed) use for VoIP network – for carrier class VoIP network exactly. SBC usually put in border as first hardware (an the only one) in public network. And base on my opinion, this SBC is a must for carrier class VoIP network for better VoIP service. Here the reasons to use SBC in VoIP network:

#1 Hide the internal VoIP Network

Our VoIP internal network must be not visible from user and partner side. It is because user and partner is in public area that we can not control and also because user and partner come trough internet (public network) so every VoIP transaction is visible for the rest of internet users. Indeed, hide the internal network from public network is a must for each network in internal (not only for VoIP network) for security reason. And SBC can perfectly do this hiding function for VoIP network without disturb the VoIP service.

#2 Keep Safe The Soft Switch

This function is base on the above hiding function exactly. Since SBC act as border for the VoIP network, others (user and partners) can not see the soft switch. They even do not aware if there is soft switch to handle their VoIP call. The only one that they see is SBC which handle all of their VoIP call. It make the soft switch in extreme safe environment. As you may already know that soft switch is designed only for VoIP switch function and surely can not handle the security, so if soft switch reachable from internet, it will be make soft switch really vulnerable from internet attack such as DdoS attack. And SBC perfectly hide soft switch from internet side.

#3 Digit Manipulation

Yup, SBC can do digit manipulation so instead use soft switch, we can use SBC to do this task. It surely will decrease our soft switch task and free up many resources. And also it will be easier to manage the digit manipulation since we do it centralized in SBC. It is surely helpful for carrier class VoIP network because they usually have many soft switch in their VoIP network and each of the soft switch may serve the different users and partners. And there fore it is surely easier to manage all of the needed digit manipulation in single point which is provided perfectly by SBC.

#4 Aggregation

Yup, SBC provide aggregation for users, partners, and soft switch. With SBC handle the users and partners in first place, the soft switch will see only one hardware that handle the users and partners which is SBC. It is surely make easier to manage all call base on soft switch perspective. And from users and partners side, they will also only know that they deal with single point (SBC) even tough they may serve by many soft switch exactly. It will be make users and partners easier to manage the call that they want send to VoIP network. Therefore, I can say that SBC do aggregation function for users, partners, and soft switch.

#5 VoIP Routing

As I write in #4 that all VoIP connection is do to and trough SBC – and this make that SBC should have capability to handle VoIP routing function. And yes, all of SBC can handle this VoIP routing as far I know. VoIP Routing function in SBC will be make all routing will be easier to manage instead if we must do it in soft switch. This VoIP routing work for both way – to internal and to internet. SBC which handle the VoIP routing management fully. SBC who decide the best path to deliver the VoIP calls.

#6 Trans-coding

As carrier class VoIP network, you should have so many users and so many partners that use different VoIP codec. It is almost impossible to ask all of them to use VoIP codec as same as our soft switch codec use. Therefore, we need to replace their codec to our codec before the soft switch can handle the VoIP call right. And we do not need to use another box for it since we already have SBC in our VoIP network. Yup, SBC can do this trans-coding function perfectly so our soft switch only deal with one codec for all of the VoIP call.

#7 Signal Manipulation

SBC can do manipulation to each VoIP signaling (such as SIP, sigtrant, H323) that SBC send. As example, SBC can change the unreachable signal become busy signal. And we may find the situation that our users or partners use some old non standard VoIP box. It will be really hard work to do the connection if we do not have box that can manipulate the VoIP signaling because usually that old non standard box send non-standard VoIP signaling also. And SBC can manipulate the VoIP signaling so our VoIP network can perfectly connect to them.

Final Words

OK, it is a rub! Yeah – I write seven reason to use SBC in VoIP network but I think there is no only seven reasons for it. There may be another reason out there but I think this seven reasons already enough to make we put SBC in our VoIP network because all of the reasons surely make us can server a better VoIP service. And in no time, this better VoIP service surely work great for our whole telecommunication business. We will get good reputation from each better service that we deliver, right?

Yup, IP knowledge is a must in telecommunication operators these days because almost all of the hardware use Internet protocol (IP). It is true – i experienced it by my self. It is true that some of telecommunication service already used IP since beginning such as data service, Intelligent Network (IN), Value Added Service (VAS) and Short Message Service Center (SMSC) – but not for voice service as core service of telecommunication operators around the world. But now the voice service is not in exception from IP anymore. You may think that this IP only use as support system of voice service but i must disappoint you – the IP already become the core of voice service in many operators.

As you may already aware that VoIP technology already introduction in this century as emerging of IP and voice service. This VoIP already provided so many voice service in around the world – especially for long distance and international voice service. There are also some VoIP service that give by free such as yahoo messenger and gtalk voice service – and do not forget about the old and most known cheap VoIP service – skype. There are so many worldwide company that able to save their telecommunication expenses because of these VoIP service. And the companies also can make their own VoIP network as long as they have internet connection to each their world wide office.

OK, You may think that all of these VoIP things do not make IP Knowledge become a must in Telecommunication operators. Yup, you are right. VoIP is a different telecommunication service if compare with old traditional voice telecommunication service . The old traditional telecommunication service which use switch technology is still become the biggest business for telecommunication service even VoIP already use world wide. It is because many people experience the bad quality from VoIP and also that VoIP service do not able service mobile user. Both of it is the biggest factor why that the old traditional switch base voice service still in this world.

And after this – you may become sure that I was wrong when said IP Knowledge is a must in telecommunication operators, right? If you think like that, you will be disappoint again soon. It is because I true that IP Knowledge is a must in telecommunication operators these days. As I said in previous paragraph, it is true that the traditional switch base voice service is still liked by users which make VoIP which is the IP voice service still do not able to replace it. So we can leave about that VoIP things and now we look what currently happen in traditional switch base voice service. If you in telecommunication operators in this two years, you should aware that almost all of the telecommunication hardware already use IP in it – and that also for traditional switch base voice service.

All of traditional switch base voice service hardware already use IP in it – even the SS7 already used over the IP. Therefore, BTS, BSC, and MSC which the core of switch base voice service also already use IP on it. It is because IP technology give the more flexible feature and also give a great saving for hardware resources. I already see some of IP Base MSC and it is really tiny if compare with the switch base MSC. It will make the companies save many resources such as place, power consumption, and others. This IP technology also make that all voice service hardware able to remote and monitor easily. And also the the traditional voice service will be easy to integrate with VoIP service so telecommunication users surly will enjoy all of flexibility trough voice service.

And the consequence of IP using in traditional voice service is that telecommunication operator guy should have IP knowledge. It is a must so all the service can run smoothly and each issue will be handle in short time. And as you know that the old traditional switch base voice service have big different with IP base technology so telecommunication guys need to learn it again from beginning. It is need hard work for telecommunication operators guys to cope up with this evolution of voice service but it is worthy because will bring telecommunication companies to next step. So, if you want to have career as telecommunication guys – especially for voice service engineer – you should learn about IP from now on because IP Knowledge surely a must in telecommunication operator these days.

CDMA 2000 Simple IP Data Service

As in my previous article – CDMA 2000 Data Services Type – there are two types of CDMA 2000 Data Service which are Simple IP and Mobile IP. I will share about CDMA 2000 Simple IP Data Service only in this article – and write about CDMA 2000 Mobile IP Data Service in next article. OK, i cut the crap and directly go to point of article. As Simple IP description already write in previous article, I will directly write the deeper of CDMA 2000 Simple IP Data Service this time – about protocol in CDMA 2000 Simple IP Data Service exactly. Please find the picture that describe about the protocol in CDMA 2000 Simple IP Data Service:

Point to Point (PPP)

CDMA 2000 use PPP as data link protocol. One PPP connection is built between MS and PDSN in each data service connection. PDSN start PPP session by send LCP Configure-request to MS right after R-P session is built. There are two conditions for PPP to be tear off – iR-P session is closed (MS or PDSN close physical connection) or PPP session is idle for certain time. In first condition, Packets which is buffered by PDSN will be disposed and ICMP destination unreachable will be sent to sender. In second condition, PDSN will tear off R-P session and PPP session so network resources can be used by others.

Link Access Control (LAC)

LAC work as upper layer of PPP. LAC is consist of five sub-layer which are Authentication, ARQ, Addressing, Utility, and "Segmentation and Reassembly" (SAR).

Authentication Sub-Layer responsible to initial authentication and work only for Access Channel (as example, from MS to RN).

ARQ Sub-Layer responsible to guarantee or not decision of packet data delivery. Guaranty mean that the data send by acknowledged in which each missing data or out of order data will be resent, and duplicate data will be disposed.

Addressing Sub-Layer work only for common channel. The function is to show and match sender and receiver address base on IMSI, ESN, and Temporary Mobile Station Identifier (TMSI).

Utility Sub-Layer do assemble and reassemble of LAC PDU (packet data unit) by add message type, encryption, radio environment report, LAC padding and length, and control LAC PDU with L3 PDU.

SAR Sub-Layer change PDU be bit stream (and contrary), also add data length and CRC.

Medium Access Control (MAC)

MAC provide procedure to control data service access with physical layer MAC and also guarantee reliability of transmission trough Radio Link Protocol (RLP) with best effort delivery service. Beside guard the data integrity, MAC also provide logical channel multiplexing to/from physical channel base on mapping logical and physical table. MAC also encourage QoS parameters negotiation by handle request conflict from competing service and prioritize the access.

Signaling Radio Burst Protocol (SRBP) is one of MAC protocols which used in CDMA 2000. SRBP use to communicate L3 signaling trough LAC sub-layer ARQ on Access Channel. SRBP responsible to choose access mode and access procedure.

Another MAC control that used is Radio Link Protocol (RLP) which use as additional for limitation in ARP ability. RLP is designed to support internet protocol which work in upper of MAC protocol.

Physical Layer

Physical layer provide air interface and cable and do specific function such as modulation/demodulation, coding/decoding, and power control. CDMA 2000 Physical Layer is consist of forward (RN to MS) and reverse (MS to RN) radio channel.

CDMA 2000 Data Service Types

There are two types of service in CDMA 2000 Data Service network which are simple ip and mobile ip. As the name, this both of CDMA 2000 Data Service base on the mobility. Simple ip is for fix users, and mobile ip is for mobile users. Simple ip is in where Mobile Station (MS) is gived dinamic IP from local PDSN (Packet Data Service Node) and service provide network is provided routing service. The IP is fix for only one PDSN so if users move from one PDSN to another, the users will be disconnected first and connect again with diffrent IP. Mobile IP service make users can do moving (handoff) between PDSN without disconnect and the IP still remain. It mean that the connection and IP still the same even users move to another PDSN.

As you may already aware, technology growth in telecommunication field is high and fast. It can say that there are always new technology that come out each year at least. Telecommunication companies surely must able to adapt it if want to survive in competition. The competition is surely hard in telecommunication field so each telecommunication company should always improve their ability – especially their technology – if do not want to leave in doom by their competitors. This situation make a migration is must in telecommunication – at leas for each year. Migration in telecommunication mean that change the telecommunication hardware with newer version.

It is also mean service and costumer transfer. Yeah – service and costumer transfer (migrate) to newer version of telecommunication hardware. I am an engineer in one of telecommunication company which make me experience this activity. A telecommunication migration surely must be prepared right. There will be a lot of disaster if we do not prepare it right. Telecommunication company may be lost many costumers because of problem after migration. For your information, i am in my way to create blog brother for this telecommunication blog. This new blog of mine is about one of telecommunication services. That's why mobile telecommunication companies will build new BTS – at least one BTS as initial while waiting the market confirmation. So, KPI value is really important regarding system evaluation. To know whether the system can deliver good service or need to be improved. And that's why I think KPI is really important in telecommunication business. KPI is needed to interpret costumers feeling (which really hard to be measured) be measurable value.

Mobile internet which is one of mobile telecommunication service is a big thing these days. Each people are surely happy to have mobile internet service which allow them to access internet any where and any time. But, of course there are some cons for mobile internet service. The most consideration is about access speed which is limited. Yeah – it is natural the speed is limited for mobile internet because the radio resources that use for mobility is limited. The internet speed never can unlimited if use radio as transmission medium. It is surely different if use optic as media transmission. And others limitation that should consider is internet bandwidth. Internet bandwidth – especially to internet – usually is limited. Therefore, there are no points of how good the speed of access (radio) speeds if the internet bandwidth can not cope with it.

That's why mobile internet provider always needs some technology that allows optimizing the limited speed of radio resources and internet bandwidth. They can optimize radio technology itself for speed up the access (radio) accessing sped. They also can put some box in network that optimizes the traffic which will affect both radio and internet accessing speed. In this article, I will only write three kind of box that can use to increase accessing speed of mobile internet. These three boxes are proxy server, cache server, and image compression server.

Proxy Server

You may already aware what proxy server is. Yes, proxy server proxying (caching) the internet most accessing site in local server so each internet access session no need to access to internet anymore. The internet session only need to access proxy server which is in local network. It surely save the internet bandwidth and increases access speed significantly. The consideration may be that all users will have the same share ip address detected in internet -- which is Proxy public IP address.

Cache Server

This box has the same function with proxy server which is caching the internet most accessing site in local server. Cache server allows users to only access local caching internet data instead access internet directly. It saves time and internet bandwidth of course. The only difference with proxy server is that cache server is working transparently. It means that the ip address that detected in internet is user IP address and not cache public IP address.

Image Compression Server

As the name, image compression server is used to compress all images that download or upload during internet accessing activities. This will help to significantly decrease internet data size and will speed up the access process for sure. This image compression also gives flexibility to users. Users can choose how deep the compression does. There are usually some ranks of compressions available from no compression until very deep compression.

All of above three boxes surely can improve mobile internet speed accessing in users side experience. Form my own experience, it can increase speed accessing up to 40%. The mobile internet provider surely can have big benefit from the box. Their users will be satisfied for the speed access while the providers save the internet bandwidth. It is double benefit indeed.

The must have function of AAA server in CDMA 2000 are:

Do authentication and authorization user NAI in roaming environment. NAI is got trough CHAP (PPP traditional service) or FAC (Mobile IP service). Using shared secret between MS and AAA.
Bring data attributes from home network to serving network
Do AAA message encryption between home network, serving network, and broker network
Support reliable AAA transport mechanism:

This Transport mechanism could give sign to some AAA application that the message is already sent to next AAA application or there is an time out
Re-transmission is controlled by AAA transport mechanism, ann not by low layer protocol such as TCP
If AAA message will be forwarded, or message choice do not match with AAA protocol, transport mechanism still will tell that node already receive AAA message.
Acknowledgement is permited in AAA messages.
Features in transport mechanism must able to detect silent failure and also to overcome that failure in proactive way
Bring digital certification in AAA messages which have purpose to minimize round trip amount in AAA transaction
Support proxy and non-proxy broker. AAA broker should have ability to modify certain part in AAA messages so can operate in proxy or non-proxy environment.
Provide message integrity and identity authentication in each AAA node
Support replay protection and non-repudiation ability in entire of authorization and accunting message
Support accounting trough bilateral agreement and AAA broker server
Provide security between AAA servers, and between AAA server and PDSN or HA with IP security.

Radio Network (RN) consist of Base Station (BS) and PCF
Circuit switched core network consist of MSC, Visitor Location Register (VLR) and Home Location Register (HLR)

AAA server interacts with Foreign Agent (FA) and other AAA server to do security function for mobile client. AAA server is responsible to support MS and agent security mechanism.

PCF communicate with RRC to request and to control radio channel which use to control radio channel for packet delivery from/to MS. PCF also responsible to collect accounting information and send it to PDSN. RCC support MS authentication and authorization to get radio access. RRC also support air interface encryption for Mobile Station (MS).

Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN)

PDSN have many function – prime function is do packet routing to IP network or to Home Agent (HA). PDSN provide dynamic IP Address and maintain Point-To-Point (PPP) session to Mobile Station (MS). PDSN start authentication, authorization, and accounting to AAA for each packet data session. In opposite direction, PDSN receive users profile parameters from AAA which consist of service type and security.

Home Agent (HA)

Home Agent (HA) act in Mobile IP protocol implementation by send all packets to PDSN (as FA) and do opposite. Home Agent (HA) provides security by do Mobile Station (MS) authentication trough Mobile IP registration. Home Agent (HA) also maintains the connection with AAA for users' information acceptation.

Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA)

AAA having different function depends on network type in where AAA is connected. If AAA server is connected to service provider network, the prime function is to forward authentication request from PDSN to home IP Network, and also to authorize response from home IP network to PDSN. AAA also keeps accounting information of Mobile Station (MS), provide user profile, and PDSN QoS information. If AAA server is connected to home IP network, the function is to do authentication and authorization for MS base on local AAA request. If AAA is connected to broker network, the function is to forward request and response between service provider network and home IP network which do not have bilateral connection.

Employee feeling in their working can be a big factor that influence working result and also influence customer feeling directly. Customer must be feeling comfortable also if the telecommunication employee that service them with comfortable feeling. Feeling spread any way.

That' why great office is needed in telecommunication business. Telecommunication is services business any way which influence closely with how people feel. One of characteristic for great office is people feel safe when in that office. There is no confusing feeling in there. I once experienced a bad feeling in office building which made me confuse in direction. I really felt dizzy to find direction in that office because there are no any clear sign of direction in there.
